I’ve been really busy with ministry. Perhaps you can relate. I tell you this not to get sympathy or even to vent, I say this because I had a realization when reading Luke.

In Luke 10:38-42, Jesus comes into Bethany and stays in the house of Mary and Martha. Martha is busy in the kitchen making a meal for Jesus, and possibly his disicples and the women with him. Luke uses the a peculiar word to describe Martha’s service, he uses the word ministry. She viewed her making dinner as her ministry. Being a food lover, I would say this is an important ministry. However her sister Mary is not helping, she is listening to Jesus. This makes Martha mad! She interupts Jesus basically asking if He cares about what Mary is doing.

What Jesus says is shocking. 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
Mary chose the right meal. Luke wants us to realize that Martha’s ministy is getting in the way of what’s actually important, Jesus.

So maybe you’re like me and you’ve let your ministry get in the way of what’s important. This is a case of what’s good and what’s better. So what is better that needs to get done today and what is just good but can wait? What is Jesus calling you to do today?
